@willia3r were you in the king of kong documentary?? lol but on a serious note, hes not judging the game by todays standards, he been gaming since your time, so hes pretty up on his stuff. hes just pointing out certain things that could have been done better, in hindsight. because obviously at the time, they were doing the best with what they had. he states its an awesome game but he rather play it on other systems. wish i grew up in your era, the golden age of gamming. now its cod shit sucks.
I actually had this game with the model 1 SMS back in the day. This game was hard. The farthest I got was level 16 and that was using the secret 3 continues. This is one of my favorite SMS games ever.
@willia3r OK,ok….Don’t get mad…..
Mark is,in my opinion,the best reviewer ever.I never had complaints on his reviews,nor did most of the people,so I find it weird for one individual complaining.
@xan1242
Are YOU kidding me? Why even bother responding to my piece? As if I’m gonna take the opinion of some random internet handle seriously.
Anyone who is judging a classic 8-bit game by today’s standards is ALWAYS suspect to me. That’s my opinion and I am sticking to it.
@willia3r You kidding me?
Mark is a gamer since Atari 2600….
So wish I live in the fantasy zone and get moon boots
fuck “on live”
@oejam
I agree. I feel that the reveiwer was kinda off base with the SMS version of Space Harrier.
But I guess you have to have grown up as a child in the 1980s to truly appreciative these 8bit games. SMS was the bomb when put up graphic-wise against the classic NES. It simply didn’t compete in term of variety unfortunately.
I disagree with this review. I think this game shouldn’t be judged just for aethesthics & apperances alone. To judge this version from a purely superficial point-of-view is to toally miss the true awesomness of an 80s classic. A classic game should be looked at from all sides.
A TRUE gamer who grew up in the 1980s as a child would know where I’m coming from. I think a person would have to live in that time period to know what is like to play the Sega Master System versus the Nintendo.
When a saw the image of the video I thought it was 3D Road runner
I have numerous versions of this game including the sega ages volum1 version (pal), but the version i play is on MAME. The MS version is the best 8bit conversion and its miles better than the clostophobiacle Atari ST version and thats 16bit.
@NicolajBaltzer666 Because all the enemies, background objects are drawn and animated on the background layer. Harrier and his shots are the only things that are sprites.
I love the lens flare on the gun on the attract screen
4:36 – A melancholy “Game Over” theme. I think Sega really made some sad sounding “Game Over” theme.
I cant believe shenmue was included when i bought space harrier for the dreamcast
the second one was better
I got the arcade version on the Virtual Console. Please can you review the Virtual Console Arcade version?
This game was designed to use the 3D mode of the master system… that’s why “it looks like something’s wrong with this game”, it was originally released for the 3D card system.. 2D version came later.
If you look at Japanese BIOS screen for SMS (NOT Sega Mark III),it looks way smoother than this and music is fantastic!They could’ve done a better version.
I just realized in this version there is no shadow for the fireball.
Kinda craps all over my review xD.
the first version i ever played of space harrier back in the day was the commodore 64 version, if you watch it on youtube, you see that it runs at normal speed.. this looks like the system is struggling
hehe .. i got this for me mastersystem..it’s like attack of the cardboard cut outs!! “get ready” on helium!
@djklink20009 he already did.
It looks a bit disoriented
