Wow, what a bad review. Okay, so Afterburner is sluggish. You can’t even dodge missiles or barrel roll in Top Gun. You’re telling me that you’d rather play a jet game where the jet barely moves than play Afterburner? Get real.
You only got 3 stages in. You didn’t even refuel or fight the flying fortress.
Yeah this game is difficult but that’s what sega masters commercials promised: the challenge will ALWAYS be THERE!!!
this game suck,if you pres diagonally up(or down) and tape the controller there you can watch tv and come back before the dificulty spike kicks in without nobody hit you,every bomb passes(ok you have to fight bosses i think or something).After the dificulty spike its pain in the ass cause missiles cant be dodged lol…

hahaha, why because he’s right? I really don’t get how any one can like top gun better than this. I just recompared to some clips of top gun and it’s got a smoother frame rate but so BOOORRRING and the backgrounds are so empty its like staring at the dotted line on an empty highway. plus i like the behind the jet view a lot more. One thing thing I hated about about after burner on the sms in the harder levels it’s virtually impossible to dog the enemy missles……

I can’t believe you’d actually rather play TOP GUN on nes….that game is about 10 times worse and has almost completely empty levels.

@TheRottenPear95 – In PSG, it’s not that good, but inside the ROM in the cartridge lies code for music in FM Synthesis produced by a Yamaha YM2413. It sounds SO much better than the PSG music, but there’s a catch: ONLY Japanese Master Systems have a YM2413. If you were to get FM Synthesis on a US or European Master System, you’d have to modify the console with an add-on PCB containing a YM2413 and some circuitry to interface the YM2413 with the Master System.

Another vote for the Tengen NES version.
Wasn’t bad for a 1987 game. I had it then. I loved it then.
Of course, when you compare it to the standards of a few years or so later when the Genesis version came around(let alone today’s standards which is what people most seem to do) it was bad. Most older games are given unfair reviews for those reasons.
It’s like saying PONG was bad because it only had 2 or 3 colors and the graphics do not compare to Call of Duty Black Ops on PS3… so it sucks.. Pong was huge in its time!
This version in my opinion is alot better than the nes version.

Afterburner for the SMS was so sad. To add insult to injury the Turbografx/PCE port was tops back in the day.

Apparently they did it on:
Amiga, Amstrad, Atari ST, Commodore 64, NES, Sega 32X, Sega Master System, PC Engine, DOS, ZX Spectrum, MSX
Can you just imagine the C64 version, Can the C64 really handle Since it was a slower clock rate processor? and I loved my C64.
I felt sick to my stomach watching this video.. when I was a kid it seemed nowhere near this bad. Some games age well, others don’t. Afterburner SMS, you fail.
