Super Mario Bros: Beyond 8-4 and the minus world
May 20th, 2012
Stuff like this has already been found by others; this is just an explanation of it all together. In the original Super Mario Bros., touching the flagpole sends Mario to the next level in the world, and defeating Bowser sends him to the first level of the next world. If you were to hack the ROM, putting a flagpole ending in world 1-4 for instance would send you to world 1-5, though that is actually just world 2-1. 2-5 would be 3-1, 2-5 is 4-1, etc. But what if you put it in 8-4? Well, you get some cool extra levels. The levels aren’t actually new, they’re just messed up versions of ones that are already in the game. You can play 8-5, 8-6, 8-7, and 8-8, but when you reach 8-9, the level automatically times out so you can’t go any further. You can also use this trick to explore further into the minus world. Normally, Mario gets stuck in a loop when he enters the pipe at the end of -1, but if you put in a flag, he can finish the level and move on to the next. -2 and -3 work (although the world numbers are actually displayed by other symbols), but -4 never appears. This video shows all these levels, but they were not recorded all together because sometimes the game will freeze and glitch up. So I actually recorded each level separately, which will explain the discrepancies in things like score and coins between each level. I also apologize for the audio getting out of sync. CamStudio’s not very good with that. But other than that, enjoy!

RPG(ology) – ★ Interview : dnd (PLATO) Creators Gary Whisenhunt & Ray Wood
May 18th, 2012
www.rpgfanatic.net Expand this description for more links and another interview! This is the best video for learning about dnd for PLATO, which is a very old game. http In the mid 1970s Gary Whisenhunt and Ray Wood created one of the earliest computer roleplaying videogames, dnd, which also happened to be one of the first “fan games”. It was inspired by Dungeons & Dragons though had different mechanics. Although little known today, their work pre-dates much better known series like Ultima, Wizardry and Dragon Quest — and is the basis for many game elements now commonly seen in videogames, such as ‘bosses’. dnd, also known as the ‘Game of Dungeons’, was distributed on the PLATO, a pioneering mainframe-based time-sharing system for computer assisted instruction which had many features modern internet users would recognize today; chat rooms, multiplayer games and email. The mainframe was remotely accessed through a system of plasma display terminals found in classrooms and libraries in many college campuses across the world. Gary and Ray later turned development of dnd over to Dirk and Flint Pellett, who continued to refine its mechanics into the 80s. I was able to track down all four authors by email and interview them; this video was conducted with only Gary and Ray, but a more in-depth interview with all four creators can be found on my website, www.rpgfanatic.net If you love rpgs games then this is the Youtube channel for you!
